In Loving Memory

Eric John Herrmann
May 29, 1953 – October 5, 2021

Outdoor Youth Connections honors our long-time supporter and Everett Mountaineers friend, Eric Herrmann who passed away last month. He was a rugged outdoorsman, expressing a rich volunteer ethic and a passion for do-it-yourself projects.

I knew Eric best through Mountaineer activities like Alpine Scrambling, Nordic Skiing, and Sea Kayaking. He leaves fond memories of his prowess for teaching Wilderness Navigation, including his amusing quest for a supply of ultra-affordable student compasses. Motivated by the  "absurdity" (his words) of $75 for a reliable compass at REI, Eric paraded several under-$10 Amazon "finds" past his students. To everyone's dismay, none worked satisfactorily, even after his creative tinkering with re-fluxing (or something like that) and metal strips strategically attached to the base. I live with mystery of floating magnets that won't point North and memories of Eric trying to persuade them otherwise.

Eric endured two years battling a persistent infection resulting from a surgical procedure. His wife, Yvonne, is grateful for his final week at their home in Castle Rock, giving them the opportunity for friend and family good-byes.

In lieu of flowers or other condolences, the family suggests donations to Eric's preferred charity:

All of us at OYC extend our heart-felt sympathies and express our gratitude for help connecting kids with nature.
